How Yarn Is Made (in Copley!)

Apr 7, 2026

Hey, so remember last week when I sent you exploring? If you’re fluent in cough-speak, you may have noticed a clue that we have a fascinating treasure in our backyard.

Let me start by saying that there are lucky people out there (lucky people such as myself) who have wandered into the world of yarn and never want to leave — the texture, the color, the possibility of what that fiber can become…

Now, imagine those lucky people knowing exactly where that yarn came from. And I don’t mean just the store or the brand, but the actual sheep.

Well, my friends, that’s exactly what’s happening at Powers Acres Fiber Mill, a fascinating treasure that opened just south of Copley Circle almost a year ago. It’s not just a yarn shop — it’s a full-on farm-to-skein operation, covering every step of the process from raising Icelandic sheep to producing finished skeins.

Powers Acres started in 2019 with a small flock and has grown into a working farm, a professional fiber mill, and an artisan yarn shop all in one. Along the way, they’ve expanded into hand-dyed yarns, custom processing services for other fiber producers, and a growing retail space that continues to evolve.

And it’s all happening here for a reason.

As Proprietor Kelly Powers put it, “Copley gave us the space — literally and figuratively — to do this right. Running a working sheep farm alongside a functioning fiber mill requires land, infrastructure, and a community that appreciates agriculture and small business. Copley has been a wonderful fit for what we’re building.”

That connection to place shows up in everything they do, from sourcing fleeces from nearby farms to creating yarn that reflects the natural colors and seasons of Ohio. They’re also building community around fiber arts with workshops, spinning groups, upcoming knitting groups, and farm-to-fashion events designed to bring people together — whether you’re a lifelong maker or just fiber-curious.

Powers Acres is more than just a charming hobbyist endeavor.

Running a fiber mill takes specialized equipment, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of fiber — from breed-specific fleece characteristics to the chemistry behind dyeing. It’s equal parts agriculture, science, and artistry… and it’s happening right here in our backyard.

And one of Kelly’s favorite things?

“When a customer brings in raw fleece from their own sheep or alpaca and picks up finished yarn a few weeks later. Watching someone hold a skein of yarn made from their own animal — that moment of connection is exactly what Powers Acres is about. It’s not just a transaction; it’s participating in something meaningful.”

In addition to stopping in at the shop, you can find Powers Acres at the Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market (Old Trail School and Howe Meadow) on Saturdays. Of course, you might also find Kelly having sandwiches and beers at Brighten Brewing or walking her dogs around the neighborhood.

If you do, tell her that you and The Loop say “hi”.
