Historic Copley Depot Open

The Copley Historical Society Depot & Caboose will be open Saturday, June 8, 1pm. We are located at 3770 Copley Road, west of Copley Circle at the railroad tracks. There will be members there to show you around and tell you about the Depot and Caboose. Come and take a short trip back in time to when time moved more slowly.

The Depot and Caboose will be open on the 2nd Saturday of each month through October.

The Depot was built in 1891 by the Pennsylvania, Akron and Western Railroad. It was located at the multiple track crossing on South Cleveland Massillon Road at Sawmill Rd, north of Copley Circle.

After passenger service was discontinued in 1954, the Depot continued being used for cargo and freight train traffic. Mr. Wilbur “Hank” Gromann, station master was charged with managing cargo and freight shipments. He was the station master until his retirement in 1974 and the depot was deactivated and closed. Having no further use for the depot, AC&Y Railroad offered the building to Mr. Gromann for the nominal price of $1.00 with the stipulation that he move it. When in danger of being destroyed, a group gathered to save it and the Copley Historical Society was formed. Starting with contributions from the Gromann family, monies were raised to move the depot to its present location. Years of tender loving care and repair and restoration and preservation bring us to the gem we have today. In 2001, the depot was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Bring the family and ”travel” back in time, when things moved a bit slower. See where passengers bought their tickets and waited for their trips to start, where the station master worked – managing the freight, keeping records, charting timetables, selling tickets. See a real telegraph unit, the cargo/freight area with a heavy-duty scale, and a replica train whistle. There are many pieces of ”unclaimed freight and mail”… maybe you will recognize a name or two! Walk through the AC&Y 1947 Caboose, believed to be only one of six surviving from that production year. See where the crews spent their time while riding the rails.
