There’s a certain kind of place you don’t fully understand until you need it.
And the moment you need it may be large and overwhelming, or small and quiet — a moment where everything just feels a little heavier than it did yesterday. The kind of moment where you’re not even sure what would help, just that something should.
And if any of those moments are connected to cancer, then Stewart’s Caring Place can help.
Their story starts with one simple, powerful realization: cancer doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It ripples outward into families, friendships, workplaces… entire communities. That understanding came from Dr. Stewart Surloff, an Akron podiatrist who, during his own cancer journey, began imagining a different kind of support system. One that wasn’t clinical. One without barriers.
Just a place where people could find comfort, connection, and space to breathe.
- Stewart and Mimi Surloff
- Stewart’s Caring Place
After his passing, his wife Mimi brought that vision to life, and Stewart’s Caring Place was founded in his memory in 2003. More than 20 years later, it has grown into a community resource serving more than 35 surrounding counties with compassion and dignity.
If you don’t know about Stewart’s Caring Place, there are three things that may surprise you:
- Their mission extends far beyond any single diagnosis, proudly offering support groups for breast cancer, prostate cancer, caregivers, grief, and more. Their support is available for anyone impacted by any type of cancer.
- That support isn’t just for patients. It’s for anyone impacted: caregivers, spouses, children, friends, even coworkers trying to figure out how to show up for someone they care about.
- Every program, every service, every bit of support is offered completely free of charge, made possible entirely through community generosity. No insurance. No billing. No hoops to jump through. Just people meeting people where they are.
And that’s the kind of place we’re proud to have in Copley.
When they were searching for a permanent home in 2019, the welcome they received from the Copley community made it clear they’d found the right place. Today, their wellness center sits on Cleveland-Massillon Road, woven into a community that values connection and care as deeply as they do.
If you’re looking for a way to experience that connection and be part of a community that cares, the perfect opportunity is coming up.
On Saturday, May 2, Stewart’s Caring Place will celebrate 20 years of the Hope Walk, a tradition that brings people together to honor, remember, and walk alongside those impacted by cancer. It’s not about distance or pace. It’s about showing up. Taking a step, and then another. A reminder that no one has to walk this journey alone.
Even if you’ve never needed a place like Stewart’s Caring Place, there’s something reassuring about knowing it’s there.
And if you ever find yourself in one of those moments — the ones when cancer touches your life or the life of someone you care about — you’ll know there’s a place to turn.
