We reserve one Loop News a month for telling you a little bit about one of the Copley Chamber’s nonprofit members — today, that member is Copley Outreach.
Because the first thing we want to tell you is that everyone involved with that organization is a volunteer, including the director. Copley Outreach receives no government funding and relies entirely on community donations and support to continue its work.
And the last thing we want to tell you is about some current and upcoming support options that are time-sensitive!
So in between, some background…
For 31 years, Copley Outreach has helped local residents put food on the table during difficult seasons. Founded in 1995 by two Copley churches that recognized a growing need in the community, the organization remains the township’s only food assistance program.
Today, under the leadership of Director Maryann Henry, Copley Outreach continues that mission by not only serving families each month, but also providing weekend meals and weekly summer food boxes for students in the Copley-Fairlawn school system.
“We serve families one at a time,” Maryann says. “We provide extra food for their needs and treat each client as if they’re part of our family.”
And that family-first approach has made a lasting impact on countless households over the years. While Maryann says there isn’t one standout success story, there are many families who have shared how much the organization’s support has meant during challenging times.
In fact, according to their website, the number of families served each month has grown from 15 to 60 over the past seven years. And during that same timeframe, the number of students served each week has more than doubled, growing from 56 to 130.
And all that means “an increase in the volume of food items needed to continue making a substantial impact on the lives of the families and students living in our community.”
So if you’re wondering how you can help, there are several ways to get involved. Residents can volunteer their time, organize a food drive, donate food, or contribute financially.
And if you’d like to support their efforts this month, tickets are now available for the Fourth Annual 4th of July Basket Raffle (which includes five fabulous prizes, one being the ever-popular “stocked bar in a basket”!).
Looking ahead, you’ll have another opportunity to support Copley Outreach at Copley Heritage Days. On August 1st, be sure to stop by the information booth to check out the hand-painted bowls available — proceeds from the sale of those bowls and of this month’s raffle tickets will help Copley Outreach continue providing food assistance to local families throughout the year.
As Maryann puts it, helping doesn’t require much, just a willingness to lend a hand to neighbors who need it.
